Weight management

Maintaining a healthy weight may help to reduce the risk of developing acne and reduce its severity.

Weight is largely determined by how you balance your intake of kilojoules from food with the energy you use in everyday activities. If you consume more than you use, you gain weight. Your body stores kilojoules that you don't need for energy as fat.

Fat is important for storing energy and insulating your body, among other things. The human body can handle carrying some extra fat, but beyond a certain point, body fat can begin to interfere with your health.

In relation to females with acne, fat converts good hormones (oestrogens) into bad hormones (which have testosterone-like actions), which is a contributing factor to acne.

So, in addition to all the other important health reasons for maintaining a healthy weight, you can also add acne prevention to the list.

This doesn’t mean that only overweight people get acne. It simply means that maintaining a healthy weight may help to reduce the risk of developing acne and reduce its severity.

The good news is that even a modest weight loss may bring health improvements to your skin. In many cases, you can accomplish this by eating better and exercising more.
